Flushing, N.Y. - Entering the game on Wednesday night, the Queens College women's basketball team looked up at just two other schools in the conference standings, one of those institutions was the District of Columbia. However, QC ended up defeating UDC, 60-57, in an ECC game played at Fitzgerald Gym.
The first four minutes of action saw both sides score six points to make it 8-all, with 15:51 remaining. Queens went ahead, 10-8, on a Madison Rowland put back with 14:41 left. QC would never relinquish the lead from that point.
The lead got up to double-digits when Joya McFarland found Rowland for a three-pointer as the first half buzzer sounded. The Knights led 35-25 at the break.
In the second half, QC's lead got as high as 17, when a MacKenzie Rowland foul shot put Queens up, 46-29 with 15:22 on the clock. The Firebirds responded from there and chipped away at the QC lead, eventually drawing within two points, with 0:10 remaining. Trying to steal the inbounds pass, McFarland was fouled and she sealed the game with a foul shot to give QC the 60-57 win.
In the win, both Rowland sisters recorded double-double with MacKenzie scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Madison finished with 12 points and 17 boards. Melissa Gardner also notched a dozen points.
With the win, Queens is now 18-6 overall and 14-4 in conference. The team returns to action on Tuesday, February 25, when they face NYIT on the road.
