Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season in a 74-68 defeat to the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans on Wednesday night. The defeat also ended the squad's four-game-winning streak.
In a tightly competitive first half, the Knights got off to a quick start by taking a 15-8 lead with in the first five and a half minutes of action. The Spartans quickly responded with an 11-2 run in the next five minutes. During the last 9:00, there were seven ties including a 34-34 stalemate at halftime.
Queens grabbed a 54-48 lead with 10:50 remaining in the second half after a Kristen Korzevinski three-pointer. From there, STAC \went on an 11-0 run during the next three minutes to take a 59-54 lead with 7:45 left. QC managed to pull within 66-64 after a pair of free-throws from MacKenzie Rowland.
The Spartans closed the game out by connecting on five of their last six shots from the charity strip to pull out a 74-68 win.
Melissa Gardner had a double-double with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 11 rebounds. MacKenzie Rowland also posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, alongside with her sister Madison Rowland who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Joya McFarland finished with 14 points. As a team, the Knights outrebounded St. Thomas Aquinas, 45-30.
The game was part of the women and girs in sports day celebrated through out college basketball. Local schoolchildren were invited to special events around the game including talks by athletes, college athletics administrators and others. At the game itself, there were prizes, giveaways and other fun contests.
The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 15 when they host Mercy. Tipoff will begin at 3:30pm.
