Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play with a 70-69 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday in Flushing. Imani Davidson's late three-pointer helped sink the Spartans.
It was really a tale of two halves for the Knights, as they built up a big lead only to see it evaporate until Davidson's three with just over a minute left. The teams went back and forth early on, with neither side grabbing a substantial lead. Kristen Korzevinksi made a layup with 8:29 left to put QC up, 30-29. The Spartans responded with a basket, but then Queens used the next 3:20 of game clock to go on a 13-4 run to build a ten point lead, 35-25.
In the scoring spree, Joya McFarland made a layup. Madison Rowland and Korzevinski each sank two foul shots. Rowland made another layup, McFarland scored again, and Rowland completed the run with a trifecta. The Knights led at halftime, 40-30.
Queens pushed the lead a bit more early in the second half; they built a 14-point lead when Amber Harrison made a layup at the 14:31 mark to make the score 49-35. From there, STAC got within two courtesy of a 12-0 run. After that, QC used a 10-2 run to grab another double digit lead. The ten points from that outburst came from the Rowland sisters and from Taylor Miller.
The Spartans fought back once again and got as close as two, but then Davidson buried the three-pointer to put QC up, 70-65 with 1:17 left. STAC scored the next four points, but Queens won, 70-69.
In the win, Madison Rowland had another double-double, scoring 20 points-on 8-of-12-shooting-and grabbing ten rebounds. She also had seven steals and six assists. Big sister, MacKenzie Rowland, totaled 17 points, with nine rebounds and four blocks. The Knights dominated the paint, outscoring the Spartans, 42-22.
The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, December 20, when they host Mercy College at 4:00 PM. Following the game with the Mavericks, the team will host Immaculata at Madison Square Garden as part of the Maggie Dixon Classic on January 4.
