Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with First-Place Concordia

Box Score

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College men's soccer team faced an 8-2-2 Concordia team on Tuesday.  The Knights earned a 1-1, double-overtime draw with the team currently in first-place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The Clippers jumped ahead early on, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Jesus Alvarez-Riesco took a shot that hit the crossbar and deflected back into play where Alessandro Persampieri put the rebound into the back of the net.  In what was a frustrating day for QC on the offensive end, they continually pressed the attack, but were unable to find the back of the net.  Eventually, in the 37th minute, Queens tied the score at 1-1.  Nicholas Matusewicz, who took three shots in the game, had a flick on goal that was blocked and was loose in front of the net.  Nikolas Maher, who came on as a substitute earlier in the half, calmly blasted the ball past the keeper for the game-tying goal.

The second half some furious action on both ends of the pitch, but neither side could find the back of the net.  Queens swtiched keepers at halftime, as sophomore starter Robbie Webster was replaced by Alexandros Taliotis, who saw his first career action for QC.  Talitos made two saves in his 65 minutes of action, including making a key save late in overtime.

Both team had scoring chances in overtime as Paul Sandoval had a shot on goal parryed away by the Clippers' keeper.  Concordia had a player hit the crossbar with a shot shortly thereafter.

The second overtime saw Isaiah Kossinne have the best scoring chance for QC, but his shot was stopped.  The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the contest, QC took 16 corner kicks to just four from Concordia.  Pol Narbona took four shots to lead the Knights.

The Queens College men's soccer team closes out its 2014 schedule on Saturday, November 1, when they host Mercy College.  The game will be preceded by the Senior Day ceremonies honoring James Dukas and Jorge Artavia.
