Flushing, N.Y. - Every team goes through the kind of game the Queens College women's basketball team had on Wednesday night, in a 69-57 win over Molloy. It was a sloppy game, peppered with lethargic play on both ends, but the Knights prevailed and halted their two-game losing streak.
The first 3:31 of action saw Queens fall behind 8-1, as their lone point came on a Joya McFarland free throw. They used an 11-3 run to grab a 12-11 advantage when McFarland hooked up with Madison Rowland for the go-ahead bucket at 12:24. Half a minute later, Nicole Arnone gave the Lions the lead again, sinking a pair of free throws. Queens eventually trailed by as many as seven points, before trimming the deficit to five, 33-28, at the half.
The second half saw both sides trading baskets early on. Evenutally QC evened the score on a pair of foul shots from MacKenzie Rowland. Both sides would share the lead over the next several minutes until Tara Fearon gave the Knights the lead for good when she made a pair of foul shots with 4:10 left in the game.
From there, a MacKenzie Rowland layup pushed the cushion to three points, and a Kristen Korzevinski layup with 2:00 left made the score 60-56, Queens. The Knights closed out the game by making 7-of-8 foul shots, with a Korzevinski layup buttressing the lead with 0:03 remaining.
MacKenzie Rowland finished with a double-double, totaling 16 points and 13 rebounds. Her little sister, Madison, scored a game-high 20 points, while Korzevinski, who saw her first action so going down with an injury on November 30 against these same Lions, finished with 11 points.
The win helped the Knights remain within striking distance in the East Coast Conference standings. The team returns to action on Saturday, February 1, when they travel to Bridgeport, Connecticut to face Bridgeport. The tip-off with the Purple Knights is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
