Queens, N.Y. - After a little hiccup earlier in
the season, the Queens College women's tennis team got back
on the winning track on Friday, with an 8-1 dismantling of Roberts
Wesleyan in an East Coast Conference match played at the tennis
courts in Flushing. The Knights improved to 4-1 with the
win.
QC showed its dominance during the doubles competition as the
team dropped just two games in the three doubles matches. The
combinations of Aylin Mehter and Jenna Plevako along with Andrea
Samson and Weronika Kurka each won 8-0, while the team of Darby
Brandon and Jennifer Fridman dominated with an 8-2 victory.
The momentum carried into singles play as well, as Queens won
five of its six matches. Mehter triumphed in first singles, 6-0,
4-0, retired. From there, Plevako won in straight sets, 6-2,
6-0, while Fridman took a set and went to 10-8 in the third before
falling in her match. From fourth singles, Samson won 6-1,
6-0. Darby Brandon took care of her opponent, 6-1, 6-0, and
Kim Xiong won her match, 5-7, 6-3, 11-9.
The Queens College women's tennis team returns to action on
Saturday, September 28, when they host East Coast Conference
newcomer, Daemen. The first serve with the Wildcats is slated
for 11:00 AM.
