Box Score Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College men's
soccer team needed to do something differently than the first two
games in order to pick up a win, and they were successful as they
went on to a 3-0 blanking of New Haven, in Flushing. With the
victory, the Knights are 1-1-1.
Anyone at the game noticed that QC made a change immediately,
attacking the goal closest to Reeves Avenue; which is a change from
the norm for them. This symbolic switch was only the
beginning as Queens came out aggressively, much different than
their normal, defensive style of play. The team would be
rewarded for their tenacity.
In the fifth minute, with the Knights pressing the attack, Pol
Narbona won a fifty-fifty ball on the left side of the pitch.
He flicked it over the defense to Tyler Iocco, who was
onsides. Iocco took possession and beat Chargers'
goalie, James Pyatsky, to his right for the opening marker.
It was the first goal of the season for Iocco, and it put QC ahead,
1-0.
The Knights added to their lead by scoring two more times in the
second half, both markers coming off of corner kicks. In the
54th minute, Peter Touros took a shot on goal that
Pyatsky was forced to parry out of bounds, giving Queens a corner
kick. Off the set piece, Glen Reid found Jose Lopez in the
box. Lopez let go a shot in traffic that was blocked back to
him. He took a few dribbles to his left and beat the goalie
for the unassisted goal. The Knights led 2-0.
The team would put the game away with just ten minutes remaining
in regulation. After earning yet another corner kick, Metri
Abdul-Karim took a corner kick that landed at the feet of Iocco,
who let go a shot that was saved but ended up at the feet of
Lopez. From there, the forward connected on his second goal
of the contest, putting the Knights ahead, 3-0.
Sean Geoghegan earned his first clean sheet of the season with
the win. The Knights outshot the Chargers, 16-7 and attempt
five corner kicks to New Haven's two. Paul Sandoval
attempted five shots, while Iocco and Lopez took two apiece.
Additionally, the Knights have now evened their record against
Northeast 10 Conference opponents.
The Queens College men's soccer team returns to the field
on Saturday, September 14, when they host Felician College.
The kickoff against the Golden Falcons is slated for 3:00 PM.
