Flushing, N.Y. (March 2, 2013) – On a night when senior
Bria Jackson entered the women's basketball program's
record books, the Knights women's basketball team ended their
2012-2013 regular season with a 65-58 victory over the St. Thomas
Aquinas College Spartans to put them at 8-10 in East Coast
Conference play.
Ending her only regular season as a Knight with 27 points
against STAC, senior Bria Jackson ended with 495 single-season
total points, surpassing Knight Alumnus Amanda Bartlett's for
8th place on the Knights all-time list. Freshman Kristen
Korzevinski added 24 points in the contest.
In the first half, Jackson earned her spot on the list after a
10-point first half performance, surpassing Karen Barbier
(476th) for 10th on the all-time list. The
Knights were up by 10 midway through the first half when STAC
started to creep back into it. With the game tied at 23 and
four minutes left, the Spartans went on a 7-2 run to take a 31-25
lead into the half.
St. Thomas Aquinas got up by as much as 37-29 in the first five
minutes of the 2nd half. However, Queens College went on
an 8-0 run to put the Knights up 38-37 thanks to baskets by
Jackson, Korzevinski, freshman Joya McFarland and fellow senior
Lisanne Comeau. Fighting for a lead the next few minutes, the
lead changed back into STAC's (9-9, ECC) favor. With 9:11
remaining in the game, Korzevinski sank the game-changing jumper to
put QC up 45-44 and the Knights would not look back from there.
Jackson's 17 second-half points helped her pass Kristen
Hoffman's 9th place mark of 482. When she sank
free throws towards the end of the game, it pushed her into
8th place on the list.
Both Jackson and Comeau were honored prior to tonight's
basketball game for Senior Day and their commitment and hard work
on Head Coach Bet Naumovski's squad. Naumovski was joined by
Athletic Director China Jude and the Queens College Athletics staff
as the women's basketball team presented senior Alexander
Garrett with a team-signed #2 jersey and the words, “most
valuable person” as recognition of his dedication to the
department all four years he has been at Queens College.
As the sixth seed of the ECC tournament, the Knights will travel
to the 1st seeded University of Bridgeport to take on the Purple
Knights in the East Coast Conference Quarterfinals on Wednesday
March 6th at 7 PM.
