Queens, N.Y. - The obstacle of defeating the
#14 team in the country, combined with having just seven players
suited up for action, proved a bit too much for the Queens College
women's basketball team, as they fell to #14 Dowling,
64-57. Their gallant effort notwithstanding, the team fought
hard until the end.
The first five minutes of action belonged to the Golden Lions,
as they built a 10-6 lead. The Knights responded though, and
Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) gave QC its first lead
with a three-pointer at the 14:01 mark.
The Knights led for most of the first half, as Kristen
Korzevinski (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) made a
three-pointer that put Queens ahead, 21-17, with 5:55
remaining. Dowling, however, closed out the half with a 16-5
run to lead at the break, 33-26.
Dowling built a 15-point lead in the second half, leading 49-34
with 11:30 to go. The Knights had an answer,
though. A Lisanne Comeau (Toronto, Ont./St. Basil the
Great) pulled QC within 8, 57-49, with less than a minute to
go. And in the final ten seconds three-pointers from Bria
Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Korzevinski kept the
Knights close, but Dowling hung on for the 64-57 win.
Jackson led all scorers with 22 points, and she is just 11
points shy of the single season points record for the school.
Korzevinski had 11 and Comeau finished with 10; while Byrnes
grabbed 16 rebounds.
The Knights closeout their regular season on Saturday, March 2,
when they host STAC at 6:00 PM. The Senior Day ceremonies
will take place prior to tipoff.
