Manhasset, N.Y. -
October has become breast-cancer awareness month throughout the
NCAA and professional sports, and at Queens College, we look back
and recognize the efforts of the dance team, who participated in
the Third Annual, Katie Oppo Memorial Run/Walk over the summer, to
help bring awareness to a different type of cancer, ovarian
cancer.
On July 23, the Queens College Dance
Team traveled to Flower Hill Park in Manhasset, Long Island,
where they dedicated their time and efforts to support the
Third Annual Katie Oppo Memorial Walk/Run, a fundraising event
designed to help raise money and awareness for ovarian
cancer. Several members of the team worked the raffle and
awareness tables,
greeted participants and received donations; all in support of
the cause. Additionally, the team gave a spirited
performance, which was overtly appreciated by the runners and
the members of the fund.
With the help from the Queens College Dance Team, The Katie
Oppo Research Fund exceeded their expectations and raised over
$25,000 from the memorial run. Through the continued hard work
and dedication the fund was able to present another grant for
$10,000 to Memorial Sloan
Kettering to continue the study of the genomic sequencing of this
rare and deadly ovarian cancer and a $40,000 grant to John
Hopkins's Research lab.
