The Queens College women's basketball team has certainly
put in long hours during the holiday break, as the squad played its
second straight home overtime contest on Saturday versus Molloy. In
the end, the Lions pulled away for the 74-65 win.
Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) entered the game
ranked second in the nation in scoring and she did not disappoint
as she finished with a game-high 22 points, including a perfect
10-of-10 from the charity stripe.
The Knights jumped out to the early 7-2 lead as they sandwiched
a Jackson three-pointer around a layup from Kristen Korzevinski
(New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) and a couple of Marie Byres
(Brooklyn, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) free throws. The Lions responded with
a 10-4 run to take a 12-11 lead when Kelly Guerriero buried a
trifecta at the 11:44 mark. Molloy led by as many as 11 points in
the opening twenty minutes, and they took a 32-23 advantage into
the half.
The second half show the Knights extend their defense and
slowly, methodically erase the 11-point deficit that Molloy had
built with the opening bucket of the stanza. Ikema Ross hit a pair
of free throws to make that 11 point cushion, but then the Knights
responded immediately as Jackson made a three-pointer, Joya
McFarland (Bronx, N.Y./JFK) stole the ball on the ensuing
possession and took it back for a layup, and Lisanne Comeau
(Toronto, Ont./St Basil-the-Great) hit a foul shot and Queens was
down 42-37, with 9:44 left. After a pair of Jackson foul shots got
the Knights within three, back-to-back buckets from Korzevinski
gave QC a 43-42 lead with just over nine minutes remaining.
Molloy responded with a 12-1 run and owned a 54-44 advantage at
the 6:21 mark. Once again, the Knights showed their resiliency as
they erased the lead to draw even with the Lions at 59-all, when
Jackson buried a pair of foul shots in the closing seconds of
regulation. The overtime period saw Molloy outscore Queens 15-6 for
the 74-65 victory.
The Knights dominated many facets of the game as they
outrebounded the Lions 54-35 and shot 77.3% from the charity
stripe. After Jackson's 22 points, Korzevinski finished with
16 while Comeau came off the bench to score 11.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, January 16 when they
host Bridgeport at 5:00 PM.
