No. 28 Women's Tennis Defeates Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill on the Road

PHILADELPHIA - The 28th-ranked Queens College women's tennis team was busy over the holiday weekend, as the Knights traveled to the City of Brotherly Love and took out Philadelphia University on Friday, 9-0, before knocking off the East Region's fifth-ranked team, Chestnut Hill College, by a 7-2 count one day later.

Friday: No. 28 Queens 9, Philadelphia 0

Three singles players for the Knights won in straight sets by identical 6-love, 6-love decisions, including sophomore Anna Rodionova (Orenburg, Russia) at No. 2, freshman Francesca Fanchin (New York, N.Y.) at No. 3 and classmate Phoebe Chiem (Duluth, Ga.) at No. 5.

Queens's trio of doubles teams combined to lose just three total games en route to starting the match up 3-0. Fanchin and junior Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) won 8-1 at the No. 1 flight, while Rodionova and Chiem teamed for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2. Junior Daniela Celi (Casselberry, Fla.) and senior Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 to round out the doubles action.

Saturday: No. 28 Queens 7, Chestnut Hill 2

A clean sweep of the three doubles matches propelled QC to victory once again. Goldsmith and Fanchin earned an 8-3 triumph at the top of the lineup, while Rodionova and Chiem once again won by an 8-2 score. Celi and Barber notched an 8-3 victory to push the Knights in front by three matches heading into singles play.

Fanchin battled out a three-set marathon at No. 2 singles to earn a victory, while Rodionova (6-love, 6-1 at No. 4), Celi (6-4, 6-1 at No. 5) and Barber (6-love, 6-3 at No. 6) also picked up wins for Queens.

Head coach Alan Nagel's Knights are back in action Friday morning, when they play host to Division I Hofstra at 10 a.m.
