FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 in NCAA Division II by the Campbell's/ITA Poll, moved to 17-0 on the 2011-12 season with a hard-fought, 4-3 decision over visiting Division I opponent, Hofstra University, Friday afternoon.
With the best-of-three doubles matches counting as one point in Friday's format, the host Knights moved ahead by securing two out of the three battles. Second-flight competitors, Anna Rodionova (So., Orenburg, Russia) and Phoebe Chiem (Fr., Duluth, Ga.) downed Bianca Derrick and Sonia Tsay by an 8-2 score, while the No. 3 flight of Daniela Celi (Jr., Casselberry, Fla.) and Taylor Barber (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) gutted out an 8-6 decision over the Pride's Paige Polizois and Malissa Gilanchi.
Freshman Francesca Fanchin (New York, N.Y.) won at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score over Gilanchi, while both Chiem and Barber used second-set tiebreaker wins to lift QC to the team victory. Chiem bested Derrick by scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (7-5 in tiebreaker), while Barber knocked off Polizois, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak).
Head coach Alan Nagel's Knights wrap up regular-season play Saturday afternoon, when they welcome Division I foe, New Jersey Institute of Technology to Flushing for a 1 p.m. start.
