Strong Depth Lifts No. 28 Women's Tennis Past Goldey-Beacom, 6-3

MEDIA, Pa. - Strong play throughout the lineup sent the Queens College women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 nationally in the March 28 edition of the Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Poll, to a 6-3 triumph Saturday afternoon over host Goldey-Beacom College in a match played at Granite Run Tennis Club.

The visiting Knights (13-0), ranked No. 1 in the East Region by the ITA tally, used two doubles victories and wins at the Nos. 3-through-6 singles flights to beat the regionally fifth-ranked Lightning (8-6).

In No. 1 doubles action, junior Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Francesca Fanchin (New York, N.Y.) used an 8-3 score to get past Stephanie Puentes and Anastasia Melnikova. Meanwhile, senior Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) and junior Daniela Celi (Casselberry, Fla.) went to a tiebreak but used a 9-7 advantage to move past Vanessa Leon and Gabriela Chaves at No. 3 doubles to give QC an important 2-1 edge.

The Nos. 3-through-5 flights earned straight-set victories for the Knights, including No. 3 freshman Phoebe Chiem (Duluth, Ga.) defeating Filipa Correia, 6-4 and 6-4. Sophomore Anna Rodionova (Orenburg, Russia) bested Marina Sales at No. 4 singles, 6-love and 6-1, while Celi took down Melanie Bonomo by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 at the No. 5 flight. Barber played a marathon match at No. 6 versus Melnikova, ultimately winning the match by scores of 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5.

Head coach Alan Nagel's Knights are back in action Sunday morning, when they travel to Philadelphia for an 11 a.m. first serve at Holy Family University.
