Having a player earn a double-double in game is a major
feat. Having a game where three players pick up
double-doubles is like climbing Mount Everest, it just
doesn't happen very often. For the Knights, three
players had double-doubles in the win, led by MacKenzie
Rowland's (Shaker, N.Y./Cohoes) 19 point, 14 rebound
effort.
The Knights jumped out to an 8-1 lead over the first
three-and-half minutes of action as Rowland, Kristen Korzevinski
(New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park), Catherine Pastor (Hewlett,
N.Y./Hewlett)and Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) all
scored buckets in that stretch. Queens used the rest of the
half to build up a lead that got as large as 20 points, when
Korzevinski scored with 1:21 to go. The Knights led 39-22 at
the half.
The second half saw more scoring from the Knights as they scored
43 points in the second half, while limiting the Mavericks to just
21. Their lead got as large as 39 points when Joya McFarland
(Bronx, N.Y./JFK) sunk a pair of free throws with less than a
second left, and the Knights won 82-43.
With the win, Queens improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the East
Coast Conference. Jackson recorded the second double-double
with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Rutgers Prep) came off the bench to pick up 11 points and 12
rebounds. Korzevinski also contributed 16 points, helping the
Knights shoot 33-64 (51.6%) in the game. They out rebounded
the Mavericks, 57-24 and grabbed a dozen steals.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, December 8, when they
face NYIT on the road in an ECC contest. The tip-off is
scheduled for 2:00 PM.
