Women's Basketball Uses Strong Defensive Effort to Defeat Post University

The Queens College women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to defeat Post University, 65-46, in a game played at Townsend Harris High School on Saturday.  The Knights, who were hosting the Clarion-LaGuardia Tipoff Classic, won both of their games over the weekend and are now 2-0 on the season.

The two teams hung around each other over the first five minutes of play as QC owned a slim, 12-9 lead when MacKenzie Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) made a layup at the 14:59 mark.  The next seven-and-a-half minutes of action saw the Knights build their lead to seven points, 25-18, as Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) scored five straight points in that stretch.

Late in the first half, Symone Swaby (DeBarry, Fla./Father Lopez) extended QC's lead into double-digits when she buried a three-pointer with 2:02 remaining to give the Knights a 32-20 advantage.  Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) made the cushion even larger when she sunk a trifecta with 0:46 seconds left to give the Knights a 35-22 lead, and QC led at halftime, 35-24.

The second half began with Post cutting the deficit to single digits when a Casey Brooks layup at 18:42 made the score 35-26 for Queens.  The Knights responded once again as they turned up the defensive pressure over the next 5:30 of game time and used a 10-5 run to push the lead up to 14 points, 45-31.  In that run, Tara Fearon (Bronx, N.Y./Blessed Sacrament) scored four of the ten QC points.

From there, the Knights used another scoring spree, this time an 8-1 run, to grab their largest lead of the game, 25 points, capped by a Lisanne Comeau (Toronto, Ont./St. Basil the Great) layup with just over seven minutes remaining.  The Eagles never threatened the rest of the way, and the Knights went on to win their second straight game.

In the victory, Jackson scored a game-high 18 points, and Comeau chipped in with 11.  Jackson led the team in scoring for the second straight contest, and Queens also won the rebounding battle, 49-28 and grabbed 11 steals that led to 11 points.  The Knights held Post to 35.3 shooting for the game, while sinking 7-of-13 three-pointers on the offensive end.

Queens returns to the hardwood on Saturday, November 17, when the Knights travel to Philadelphia to face Holy Family University in a 3:00 PM scheduled start.
