No. 28 Women's Tennis Blanks Philadelphia U., 9-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 nationally by the Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Poll, opened its spring season in style Saturday afternoon by shutting out visiting Philadelphia University, 9-0.

Prior to the match, Queens (16-0) celebrated Senior Day, as head coach Alan Nagel and the Knights recognized Laura Mocodeanu, Maria Mendes and Maria Perevezentseva for their contributions to the QC program.

Queens earned victories in all three doubles flights to start the match, with the tandem of Linda Tatala-Colin and Andrea Salvetova scoring an 8-1 decision at the No. 1 flight over the Rams' Brittany Villa and Isabella Espinosa. Erika Goldsmith and Mocodeanu then paired up at No. 2 to capture an 8-2 victory over Sayre Limburg and Elizabeth Verbits, while Taylor Barber and Daniela Celi won by default at No. 3.

Tatala-Colin (over Limburg) and Celi (over Verbits) scored 6-love, 6-love triumphs in the No. 2 and 4 singles flights, respectively, while Mendes topped Villa at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-3. Perevezentseva emerged victorious at No. 5 over Kaitlin MacQueen by a 6-1, 6-love count, while Mocodeanu, ranked No. 43 nationally, gutted out a three-set match at the top of the table over Espinosa, 3-6, 6-2 and 7-6 (7-3 in tiebreaker). Kim Xiong won by default at No. 6 singles for the Knights.

Queens is back in action Sunday afternoon (April 10), when it plays host to Holy Family University.
