No. 28 Women's Tennis Races Past Goldey-Beacom, 8-1

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Queens College women's tennis team, ranked No. 28 nationally in the latest Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Poll, opened the spring portion of its season with a bang Saturday afternoon, pushing to 15-0 on the season after defeating host Goldey-Beacom College, 8-1.

The visiting Knights, ranked No. 2 in the East region by Campbell's and the ITA, picked up a crucial victory over GBC (12-5) – which is ranked No. 5 in the regional tally.

QC swept through all three doubles matches to start the match including an 8-6 triumph at the top flight by Andrea Salvetova and newcomer Linda Tatla Kolin versus Marina Sales and Gabriela Chaves. Laura Mocodeanu and Erika Goldsmith toppled Blanca Sancho and Vanessa Leon at the No. 2 flight by an 8-3 count, while Taylor Barber and Maria Mendes swept past Laura Cure Peters and Marie-Louise Klein at No. 3, 8-love.

43rd-ranked Mocodeanu  defeated Sancho by a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles, while Goldsmith and Mendes beat Klein (6-2, 6-1) and Sales (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 2 and 3 flights, respectively. Daniela Celi scored a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Peters at No. 5, while Salvetova rounded out the victory with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win at No. 6 singles versus Chaves.

Head coach Alan Nagel's Queens side is back in action Saturday, when it plays host to a 12 noon first serve against Philadelphia University.
