DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyler Iocco tallied off a feed from senior Santiago Bedoya in the 11th minute Monday afternoon, as the Queens College men's soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2), and improved to 3-0-1 in East Coast Conference action after knocking off host Mercy College, 1-0.
The visiting Knights (6-5-2 overall) posted their fourth-consecutive clean sheet, and have now held the opposition scoreless over the last 418:20 of play. Senior keeper Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) made three saves against the Mavericks (5-5-1, 1-3 ECC), who outshot QC by a 15-10 count and held a sizeable 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
Bedoya (E. Elmhurst, N.Y.) sent in a long free kick in the 11th minute of play, and Iocco headed the ball home for his second tally of the season – providing all the offense QC would need on the afternoon. For Bedoya, it was his third assist of the 2011 campaign.
The Mavericks outshot the visitors by a 9-5 margin in the second half of play in attempts of finding the equalizer. However, it was the Knights' defense that stood tall in preserving the three points in the ECC standings.
Queens now has 10 points (3-0-1) through four matches played in ECC action; the only other undefeated team in the standings is sixth-ranked C.W. Post, who has been perfect through all 11 of its matches – including a 3-0 count in conference play.
Head coach Carl Christian's Queens side continues its road swing Wednesday night (Oct. 12), when the Knights travel to East Stroudsburg (Pa.) for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Eiler-Martin Stadium against the host Warriors.
