It was announced on Wednesday afternoon that Senior Maria Mendes
has been selected as this season's first East Coast Conference
Women's Tennis Player of the Week Award recipient. Maria helped the
Knights kick off their title defense with a trio of 9-0 wins this
past week. Later in the day, Mendes and her teammates won at
Molloy, 9-0.
The native of Sao Paolo, Brazil was perfect in singles play,
recording three consecutive wins without surrendering a point. In a
season opening win over STAC, Maria beat Erin Maher, 6-0, 6-0 and
then beat Brittany Aimone of Georgian Court three days later, 6-0,
6-0, with both victories coming at third singles.
Maria wrapped up her week on Saturday with a 6-0, 6-0 win at
first singles over Rebecca Stein of NYIT. She also paired with
Laura Mocodeanu at second doubles to go 3-0 for the week.
