Paul Sasso returns for his third season as a member of the Knights coaching staff
The 2020 season was cut short due to the global pandemic but the Knights would see three pitchers being named on the first East Coast Conference weekly award sheet as Rob Backus (Pitcher of the Week) Evan Christopher (Rookie of the Week) and Dylan Hughes (Honor Roll) to start the season.
Sasso joined the Knights staff as a pitching coach prior to the start of the 2019 season. During the 2019 season, the Knights would return to the East Coast Conference postseason for the first time in 21 years. Senior Dennis Buckstein would break the Knights’ single-season strikeout record as the Knights finished 25-24-1 overall record with a return to postseason play.
Sasso brings over 40 years of coaching experience including 22 years as a pitching coach which includes previous stints at Molloy College, SUNY Maritime, Kingsborough CC, and two years at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, N.Y.
At SUNY Maritime, Sasso was instrumental in turning around the pitching rotation as in 2011 the team combined for their best ERA as they allowed 131 earned runs over 245 1/3 innings for a 4.81 ERA. . In 2014, the Privateer pitching staff earned 13 victories including the first two no-hitters in modern team history as senior Nick Sarna collected a perfect game against Yeshiva on March 11, followed by classmate Trevor Cannella spinning a no-hit gem against St. Joseph's on April 5.
