Queens Tops LIU, 4-3, Behind Vasic’s Comeback Win

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Opening the final week of the regular season, the Queens College women's tennis team traveled to Brookville Monday afternoon for a cross-divisional matchup against the Long Island University Sharks at the LIU Tennis Courts.

Despite LIU being shorthanded, the match came down to the wire as rookie Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) delivered a clutch three-set comeback victory to lift the Knights to a 4-3 win.

With the victory, Queens improves to 14-3 overall on the season.

Doubles Play

With LIU unable to field a full lineup, Queens opened the match with a default victory to take a 2-0 lead and a 1-0 lead in doubles play.

The Sharks evened doubles play with a win at the No. 2 position, but the No. 1 duo of senior Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France) and freshman Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Leena Kuittinen and Ksenia Reznitskaya, giving Queens a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.

Singles Play

LIU responded by claiming victories in the top three singles positions to even the match at 3-3, setting the stage for a decisive battle at No. 4 singles between Vasic and Kuittinen.

After dropping the opening set 6-3, Vasic rallied to take a tightly contested second set in a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak before closing out the match with a 10-8 victory in the third-set tiebreak to secure the team win for Queens.
