No. 21 Queens Women’s Tennis Cap Perfect ECC Season with 4-3 Win Over UDC

WASHINGTON, DC. – Competing in their lone match of the week, the No. 21 Queens College women's tennis team traveled to the nation's capital to face the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds in East Coast Conference action.
 
The Knights controlled the match early, securing the doubles point before splitting singles play to earn a 4-3 victory. Junior Sixtine Goubet (Lyon, France) delivered the clinching point at No. 2 singles.
 
With the win, Queens improves to 13-3 overall and caps off conference play with a perfect 8-0 record.

Doubles Play

With UDC unable to field a full lineup, Queens earned a default win to take a 2-0 lead before play began.
 
The Firebirds responded at No. 2 doubles, where the junior duo of Lilie Bizouerne (La Ciotat, France) and Sixtine Goubet (Lyon, France) fell 6-4 to Lina Benjelloun and Sofia Shaparenko to even the score.
 
The nationally ranked No. 21 pairing of senior Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France) and freshman Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Polina Zelentsova and Celia Bastin at the top spot.

Singles Play

Needing just two singles victories to clinch the match, Queens quickly took control.
 
Bizouerne, ranked No. 46 nationally, dominated at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Benjelloun to extend the lead to 3-0.
 
Goubet, ranked No. 68 nationally, sealed the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bastin.
 
UDC responded with wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 singles to narrow the final margin to 4-3.

Next Match:

Having concluded Division II play, Queens will wrap up the regular season with two cross-divisional matchups. The Knights next face Division I opponent Long Island University on Monday, April 13, with first serve set for 1:00 p.m.
