Women’s Tennis Pushed to the Brink in Saturday Showdown

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. – Wrapping up weekend action in Port Washington, the Queens College women's tennis team faced Division I foe Hofstra University at Sportime Port Washington in cross-divisional play.

Despite a strong effort, the Knights were edged 4-3, moving to 6-2 overall on the season.

Doubles Play

Queens battled throughout the doubles competition to secure the opening point.

At No. 1 doubles, the senior-freshman tandem of Marie Bertran (Villelaure, France) and freshman Ela Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) delivered a dominant 6-1 victory over Aida Ovideo and Aryanah Kahnamoui.

Hofstra answered at No. 2 doubles, as juniors Lilie Bizouerne (La Ciotat, France) and Sixtine Goubet (Lyon, France) dropped a 6-3 decision to Isabella Cardinal and Sabira Mohamed.

The decisive doubles match came at No. 3, where sophomore Johanne Genestay (Dinan, France) and senior Lydia Zafeiri (Athens, Greece) earned a 6-3 win over Katarina Drinchich and Ava Veneziano, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Singles Play

Genestay extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.

Goubet followed with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win at the top flight, pushing Queens ahead 3-0.

However, the Pride mounted a comeback as three of the final four matches went the distance.

Bizouerne fell at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4, before Ovideo rallied past Vasic in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

At No. 6, Zafeiri claimed the opening set 6-4, but Cardinal responded with 6-2 and 6-1 set wins to even the team score at 3-3.

The match came down to No. 5 singles, where senior Kayla Taszymowicz (Brooklyn, N.Y.) battled in a tightly contested showdown. After dropping the first set in a 7-6 tiebreak, she responded with a 7-5 second-set victory to force a deciding third set. In a back-and-forth finale, Taszymowicz narrowly fell 7-5, sealing the 4-3 victory for Hofstra.
