FLUSHING, N.Y. – Concluding the week at home, the Queens College men's basketball team welcomed the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans to Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon for East Coast Conference action.
Three Knights finished in double figures, led by junior guard
Dontae Prescott (Coney Island, N.Y.), who scored a team-high 19 points. Sophomore guard
Lleyton Fried (Harrisburg, PA) added 12 points, while senior forward
Tahj-Malik Campbell (Philadelphia, PA) chipped in 10.
Queens was unable to overcome a slow start in the first half as the Spartans pulled away for a 107-72 victory.
GAME RECAP
The Spartans opened the contest on a 7-2 run before the Knights responded with a 7-4 spurt to pull within two, 11-9, at the 14:03 mark.
Queens then went cold from the field, allowing the Spartans to capitalize with a 16-3 run to extend the lead to 27-12 with 10:39 remaining in the first half.
A layup by junior guard
Johnny Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) snapped the scoring drought and sparked a 7-3 run for Queens, cutting the deficit to 30-19 with 6:17 left before halftime.
Turnovers proved costly down the stretch, however, as STAC closed the half on a 25-5 run to take a commanding 55-24 lead into the break.
Queens showed improved efficiency in the second half, shooting 52.9 percent from the field, as Prescott and Fried combined for 21 points.
Despite the offensive lift, the first-half deficit proved too much to overcome, and the Knights dropped the ECC contest, 107-72.
