Rookie White Records Career-High 19 Kills as Women’s Volleyball Competes in the SCSU Tri-Match Saturday

NEW HAVEN, CT. – On Saturday, the Queens College women's volleyball team made the trip to New Haven, CT, to compete in the SCSU Tri-Match hosted by Southern Connecticut State University Owls inside Pelz Gymnasium.
 
The Knights fell to the score of 3-0 against the Owls before falling short in a tightly-contested four-set match against the Tigers of Holy Family University to the score of 3-1.

Match Recap – Queens 0, SCSU 3 (Set Scores: 23-25, 21-25, 14-25)

In their first match of their day, the Knights fell behind 7-3 before the defense battled back to go on a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 advantage. Just as the Owls responded to retake an 11-10 lead, Queens answered back with a 7-3 run for a 17-14 lead.
 
Errors would hurt the Knights as the Owls used a 4-0 run for a slim 18-17 advantage before an Owls' error, followed by back-to-back service aces from rookie setter Kylynn White (Chicago, IL) put the Knights back up to the score of 20-18.
 
The Owls would use the Knights' error to their advantage to take a 1-0 set lead with a 25-23 first set victory.
 
In the second set, the trio of White, senior outside hitter Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA), and senior middle blocker Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, Fla) combined for four kills as the Knights traded points in the early going.
 
But a 10-3 run from the Owls would see them take a 14-7 lead. Queens answered back as they used a 12-6 run to get within one, 20-19 in the set. But four straight kills from the Owls would see them take a 2-0 set lead with a 25-21 second set victory.
 
In the third set, the Knights fell behind 11-3 and never recovered as the Owls earned a 25-14 set victory and a 3-0 sweep over the Knights.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • White paced the Knights' offense recording a team-high seven kills to go with 11 digs, five assists, three service aces, and two blocks.
  • Osterhoudt recorded four kills, two digs, and two blocks.

Match Recap – Queens 1, Holy Family 3 (Set Scores: 20-25, 29-31, 25-20, 23-25)

Errors would hurt the Knights in the opening set as the Tigers earned a 25-20 first set victory to take a 1-0 set lead.
 
The second set would be a back-and-forth affair as it saw 10 ties and five lead changes. With the Tigers leading 22-18, a kill from White would lead a 6-1 run as the Knights combined for four kills, one service ace, and a block to take a 24-23 advantage.
 
But the Tigers responded with a 4-1 run before a service error and a kill from senior outside hitter Elizabeth Cerullo (Saint James, N.Y.) put Queens at set point and in position to tie the match once again. However, both sides would trade the next four points before the Tigers pulled away to earn a 31-29 set victory and take a 2-0 lead.
 
The duo of White and Osterhoudt would lead the charge in the third set as they combined for nine kills. As the Tigers tied the set at 14-14, a kill from White and a solo block from senior setter Jayna Marie Lorenzo (Rodeo, CA) would start a 6-2 run as Queens took a 20-16 lead.
 
Holy Family would get within two, 22-20, but back-to-back errors by the Tigers handed the Knights set point, which was sealed by a service ace from White as the Knights forced the fourth set with a 25-20 victory.
 
With the Knights looking to force a decisive fifth set, the fourth set would see 10 ties and seven lead changes. As Cerullo and Conrad combined for back-to-back kills to put the Knights up 7-6, the Tigers would go on an 8-3 run to take a 14-10 lead.
 
A kill from Conrad started a 9-4 run for the Knights as Queens was able to take a 19-18 advantage. However, the Tigers would respond back to earn a 25-23 fourth set victory and the match 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • White recorded her third career double-double with a career-best 19 kills on a hitting % of .395 to go with 13 digs, a career-best six service aces, nine assists, and one block.
  • Osterhoudt recorded nine kills on a .500 hitting % to go with three digs, one block, and one service ace.
  • Conrad recorded nine kills and two blocks.
  • Marie Lorenzo notched 27 assists, seven digs, three kills, one service ace, and one block.  
  • Senior libero Alexis Stoehrer (Medford, N.Y.) recorded 22 digs, six assists, and one service ace.

Next Match

Staying on the road, the Knights head to Caldwell, N.J., on Tuesday, September 16, for a non-conference contest against the Cougars of Caldwell University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
