STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Queens College women's basketball duo of sophomore forward
Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and rookie guard
Sajol Thornhill (Ashburn, VA.) combined for 28 points in the Knights regular season finale against the College of Staten Island Dolphins Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference play.
The Knights would get close to as much as three points in the second half before the Dolphins used a strong fourth quarter to pull away and defeat Queens to the final score of 70-52 inside The Tank.
The Knights conclude the 2024-2025 season with an overall record of 10-16 and 5-11 in East Coast Conference play.
GAME RECAP
It would be slow going in the first quarter as the Dolphins used an early 11-2 start to stay ahead.
Behind an 8-4 run the Knights would get within five, 15-10 by the 1:56 mark before the home side ended the stanza on a 4-0 run and take a 19-10 lead.
Queens would pick up momentum in the second quarter as they shot 46.6% from the field while making seven field goals but the Dolphins would shoot 54.5% from the field as the Knights went into locker rooms trailing by eight, 33-25.
The Knights opened the third quarter on a 6-1 run as they were able to get within three, 34-31 by the 7:43 mark. However, the Dolphins used an 8-0 run to extend their lead back to double digits, 42-31 by the 5:21 mark.
Led by Awaka, Thornhill, and rookie guard
Arianna Lopez (Newburgh, N.Y.) the Knights would cut their deficit down to eight, 49-41 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Looking to mount a comeback, a slow start to the fourth quarter would hurt the comeback attempt as they were held to four made field goals to fall to the final score of 70-52 Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Awaka led the offense with 18 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
- Thornhill tallied 10 points, six assists, four rebounds, and one steal in the contest.
- Rookie forward Chinyere Ukaegbu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched nine points, six rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block.
