FLUSHING, N.Y. – Opening a two-game homestand sophomore forward
Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 18 points as the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Mercy University Mavericks inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium Wednesday evening in East Coast Conference play.
But the Knights were unable to overcome a first half deficit to drop the ECC contest to the final score of 77-47.
With the loss, the Knights move to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in ECC play.
GAME RECAP
The Mavericks opened the game taking a 6-0 lead before the trio of
Arianna Lopez (Newburgh, N.Y.), Sajol Thornhill (Ashburn, VA.) and Awaka put the Knights on a 10-2 run to take a 10-8 lead by the 3:06 mark. The visitors would close the stanza on a 9-0 run to take a 17-10 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Queens would be held to four made field goals on 26.7% shooting while the Mavericks shot 50.0% from the field on seven made field goals as they took a 37-19 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Knights were outscored 20-9 as the Mavericks took advantage of nine turnovers. While in the fourth quarter, the Knights would shoot 41.7% from the field as they kept pace with the visitors but the first half deficit would prove too much to overcome.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Awaka recorded 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go with nine rebounds, one block, one steal, and one assist.
- Lopez recorded 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in the contest.
- Thornhill notched eight points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

Continuing ECC play, the Knights conclude their home portion of their 24-25 schedule on Saturday, Feb. 22 as they welcome the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to town. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm
