BUFFALO, N.Y. – Returning to East Coast Conference play to conclude the week's play the Queens College women's soccer team traveled to Buffalo as they matched up against the Saints of D'Youville University at Dobson Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Knights wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead as sophomore
Ava Angiuli (Wantagh, N.Y.) blasted a 35-yard shot over the Saints goalie in the 46
th minute of play before senior
Julia Ragone's (Centereach, N.Y) third goal of the year in the 67
th minute sealed the game as Queens earned a 2-0 shutout over the Saints Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Knights improved their record to 4-3 on the year, and 1-1 in ECC Play. Saturday's win over the Saints in Buffalo also earned Queens their first victory at Dobson Field.
GAME RECAP
Playing in windy and rainy conditions the Knights began the game as the aggressor as the Knights recorded two shots and earned two corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
In the 22
nd minute of play sophomore
Anna Tavantzis (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied a shot on goal but would be denied by a timely save from the Saints goalie.
Queens would outshoot D'Youville 5-0 in the first half hour before the Saints were able to register a shot.
But Tavantzis's shot on goal would be the best opportunity for a goal for either side as both teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie.
The Knights wasted no time opening the scoring as junior
Adriana Melgar (Queens, N.Y.) played a pass to Angiuli who sent a 35-yard shot from midfield over the Saints goalie for a 1-0 lead just 56 seconds into the second half.
Queens would continue to attack and create more opportunities as they looked to put the game out of reach.
As the Knights kept the Saints out of their attacking zone, freshman
Keeley Harden (Orlando, FL.) would deliver a long pass for Ragone who battled past two defenders before beating the Saints goalie through the bottom right corner for a commanding 2-0 lead in the 67
th minute of play.
In the final 15 minutes of play rookie goalie
Samantha Hines-Hirsch (Plainview, N.Y.) would come up big as the Plainview native recorded two saves as Queens earned their first ECC win of the year.
