DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Continuing their road trip, the Queens College men's basketball team traveled to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for an East Coast Conference matchup against the Mavericks of Mercy University inside Neil Judge Student Athlete Center Wednesday evening.
Three Knights scored in double-figures led by a game-high 24 points from
Sunnie Diamond (Atlanta, GA), while junior
Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) notched 19 points and senior
Malik Bentinck (St. Albans, N.Y) recorded his 11
th double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds but missed opportunities in the latter stages of the game would see the Knights fall to the final score of 91-87.
With the loss, the Knights move to 12-12 and 6-7 in ECC play and fall into sixth place in the ECC standings with three games left in the regular season.
GAME RECAP
It would be back and forth affair in the first five minutes of the game but with the game tied 13-13, the Mavericks would go on a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead with 12:56 left until halftime.
Led by Diamond's three-pointer at the 12:48 mark, the Knights would start a 15-0 run to the 8:50 mark as Queens took a 28-17 lead.
The Knights would continue to stay ahead as the home side started to cut into Queens' advantage. With Queens leading by 10, 35-25 with 5:20 to go, the Mavericks would end the first half on a 15-6 run but the Knights would take a one-point lead of 41-40 at halftime.
The home side continued their first-half momentum as they opened the second quarter on a 16-5 run from the 18:52 mark to the 15:19 mark to take a 10-point lead of 56-46.
With the Knights struggling to get consistent scoring going, the Mavericks would take their largest lead of the game for a 14-point advantage of 67-53 with 10:59 to go.
A three-pointer from junior
Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) at the 10:38 mark would help the Knights put together a 17-6 run as Queens got within three, 73-70 with 6:20 left in the game.
Having cut their double-digit deficit down to single digits for the final six minutes of the game, Mercy would knock down free throws to stay front to defeat the Knights to the final score of 91-84 Wednesday evening.
By the Numbers
- Diamond led the Knights with a near double-double scoring a team-high 24 points (8-of-16 FG, 4-of-8 3PT, 4-of-5 FT) to go with nine rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
- Chester recorded 19 points (7-of-16 FG, 4-of-8 3PT, 1-of-2 FT) to go with eight rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block.
- Bentinck notched his 11th double-double of the year with 12 points (5-of-12 FG, 2-of-3 FT) with 10 rebounds and two assists.
- Seraphin notched 9 points (4-of-8 FG, 1-of-2 3PT) to go with five rebounds and one steal on the evening.
- As a team, the Knights were held to 44.6% going 33-of-74 from the field, while the Mavericks shot 46.9% on 30-of-64 shooting.
- Queens held a 48-37 rebounding margin scoring 26 second-chance points.

The Knights travel to Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon with a matchup against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
