Game Day Preview: Road Trip Continues as Men’s Basketball Travels to Mercy & STAC

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team fell in their lone game last week to Roberts Wesleyan University to open their four-game road stand.
 
It is two key games in East Coast Conference play as the road stand continues with the Knights opening the week with a trip to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Wednesday (Feb. 21) evening against the Mavericks of Mercy University before completing the week in Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon against #16 (D2CSC) Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Queens College Knights Preview

  • The Knights went 0-1 last week as they fell in their lone game to Roberts Wesleyan to open their four-game road trip.
  • Senior forward Malik Bentinck (Queens, N.Y.) is averaging 12.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game with ten double-doubles on the year.
    • In the victory over Goldey-Beacom (Jan. 13) Bentinck recorded a career-high 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the win over Roberts Wesleyan (Jan. 19).
    • On Tuesday (Dec.12) the senior earned MBWA Honorable Mention for his first regional honors of the year.
    • On Monday (Jan.29) Bentinck earned his fifth Honor Roll spot and has earned two Defensive Player of the Week nods.

      • Honor Roll: Nov. 20 | Dec. 4 | Jan. 8 | Jan. 22 | Jan. 29
  • Junior Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) has found his scoring rhythm and is averaging 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
    • Chester has recorded several career-highs this year
      • Points - 32 points against Molloy (2.7)
      • Rebounds – 9 (2x) against Molloy (1.10) & Goldey-Beacom (1.13)
      • Assists – 8 against Roberts Wesleyan (1.19)
    • On Monday (Feb. 12) Chester earned his second consecutive spot on the ECC Weekly report sheet as the junior was awarded his second Honor Roll spot of the year.
      • Player of the Week: Feb. 5
      • Honor Roll: Jan. 16 | Feb. 12
    • On Tuesday (Feb. 13), Chester earned his second straight MBWA Honorable Mention spot to join Bentinck as the two Knights to earn multiple spots this year.

Mercy University Mavericks Preview

Last Loss: February 9, 2022 (Home 51-65)
  • Mercy enters the week with an overall record of 1-22 and 0-13 in ECC and are coming off a loss to Daemen over the weekend.
  • Wednesday's meeting will be the second meeting of the season and the 48th overall with the Knights leading the series 36-11 and looking to complete the series sweep.
  • Jayden Dewaal leads the offense averaging 15.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
  • Alex May is averaging 15.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.

St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans Preview

Last Win: December 9, 2015 (Away 69-64)
Last Loss: February 3, 2024 (Away 76-89)
  • STAC enters the week with an overall record of 20-5 and 11-2 in ECC and are coming off a win over D'Youville Sunday afternoon.
  • Saturday's meeting will be the second meeting of the year and the 48th overall with the Knights trailing the series 21-26
  • The Knights are looking to end a 14-game losing streak against the Spartans and earn their first victory since the 2015-16 season when they earned a 69-64 victory in Sparkill.
  • James Patterson leads the offense averaging 24.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.
  • Kyle Pulliam is averaging 13.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

Next Game

The Knights conclude the road trip in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (Feb. 28) evening as they match up against the Firebirds of the University of District of Columbia. Tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
