Three Knights Score in Double-Figures as Women’s Basketball Tangles With AIC in Non-Conference Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Concluding their homestand, the Queens College women's basketball team welcomed the American International College Yellow Jackets to Fitzgerald Gymnasium in non-conference play.
 
Three Knights scored in double-figures led by rookie guard Ashley Chio (North Vancouver, Canada) team-high 15 points, sophomore guard Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) with 14 points, and rookie guard Arianna Lopez (Newburgh, N.Y.) with 11 points, but the Knights would fall to the final score of 72-50 Monday evening.

GAME RECAP

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring taking a 4-0 lead before Abrams got Queens on the board at the 8:31 mark. But as the visitors extended their lead to 6-2, Queens would respond behind Lopez recording five straight points as Queens took a 7-6 lead at the 6:46 mark.
 
AIC would retake the lead with a layup for an 8-7 advantage before Chio answered with five straight points for a 12-8 Queens' advantage at the 5:06 mark.
 
Over the final five minutes of the first quarter, Queens would hold AIC to one made field goal as the Knights took a 15-11 lead into the second quarter behind a made free throw from rookie forward Jaeda Hall (Saint Albans, N.Y.) and a jumper from rookie forward Chinyere Ukaegbu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to end the stanza.
 
AIC opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to tie the game at 15-15 at the 8:21 mark.
 
A jumper from Chio at the 7:53 mark would help Queens retake a slim lead of 17-15 before the visitors answered with an 8-0 run to take a 23-17 advantage by the 6:21 mark.
 
But as a Lopez three-pointer at the 5:59 mark brought Queens within three, 23-20, the Yellow Jackets would end the second quarter on a 14-5 run as they took a 37-25 lead at halftime.
 
Queens would be held to eight made field in the second half of play while the visitors shot over 50.0% from the field to keep their double-digit advantage intact to defeat the Knights Monday evening.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Chio led the Knights' offense with a team-high 15 points to go with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Abrams tallied 14 points and Lopez recorded 11 points as the duo combined for four rebounds, four assists, one block, and five steals.
    • Lopez recorded a career-best four steals in the contest.

NEXT GAME

The Knights conclude the week in Rochester, N.Y. as they return to East Coast Conference play on Friday, Dec. 13 with a matchup against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
