WILMINGTON, DE. – Looking to end their week on a two-game win streak the Queens College men's basketball team traveled to Wilmington, Delaware for a non-conference match-up against the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College Saturday afternoon.
In another balanced scoring effort, junior guard
Jade Tse (Queens, N.Y.) led the way with a career-high 18 points, while the senior duo of forward
Damiri Lindo (Oakland, CA) and guard
Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 28 points as the Knights defeated the Lightning to the final score of 73-56.
With the victory, Queens improves to 2-3 on the year. Their victory over the Lightning earns Queens their second straight victory over their non-conference foe and their largest margin of victory in three games.
GAME RECAP
For the second straight game, Queens came out firing with Tse leading the charge with five points as Queens opened the game with a 9-2 advantage.
The duo of senior guard
Nasan Ayala (LeFrak City, N.Y.) and Lindo would extend their advantage to 14-3 by the 15:25 mark as the Knights kept the Lightning to one field goal for the first five and half minutes of play.
But as the fouls picked up on the Knights, the home side would use the charity stripe to cut into the Queens' advantage to the score of 14-10 by the 13:28 mark.
Tse and Chester would extend Queens' advantage back to eight, 18-10 by the 12:33 mark before a 5-0 run by the Lightning got them within by three, 18-15 forcing a Queens timeout at the 11:47 mark.
Queens would respond with a run of their own as Chester tallied five straight points to start a 13-2 run from the 10:23 mark to 4:56 as the Knights took their largest lead of the half of 14 points to the score of 31-17.
The home side would use the final 4:38 of the first half to go on a 9-4 run, but the Knights would take a nine-point lead of 35-26 into the locker rooms at halftime.
Both sides opened the second half trading buckets but the Knights would keep their nine-point lead intact.
Leading 39-30, senior guard
Jayden Seraphin (Lakeview, N.Y.) three-point play started a 10-4 run as the Knights extended their lead back to double digits of 15 points, 49-34 by the 15:22 mark.
Goldey-Beacom would attempt a rally using a 5-0 run to cut the gap down to 10 points, 49-39 before a layup from Lindo started a 16-6 run capped off by back-to-back threes from rookie guard
Tyler Michel (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) and Chester as Queens took their largest lead of the game of 20 points, 65-45 at the 7:07 mark.
With still seven left minutes in play, the Knights would hold the Lightning to just three made field goals over the final 6:39 minutes of play to earn the 73-56 victory over their non-conference foe for their second straight victory of the week.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Tse led the Knights with a game-high 18 points (6-of-12 FG | 1-of-4 3PT | 5-of-6 FT) to go with three assists and one rebound.
- Lindo recorded 16 points (7-of-8 FG | 1-of-2 3PT | 1-of-1 FT) to go with three rebounds and two steals.
- Off the bench, Chester (4-of-9 FG | 2-of-5 3PT | 2-of-2 FT) to go with two rebounds and two assists.
- Ayala notched seven points, a team-high five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
- Seraphin recorded seven points (3-of-5 FG | 1-of-1 FT) to go with four rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
- As a team Queens shot a season-high best 27-of-55 from the field (49.1%), 6-of-17 from distance (35.3%), and 13-of-19 at the free throw line (68.4 %).
- The Knights forced 11 Lightning turnovers into 11 points and recorded 15 fast break points.
NEXT TIP-OFF
The Knights open another two-game home stand beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as they welcome the Eagles of Post University to town. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
