PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Continuing the ECCxCACC Conference Challenge, the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against host Griffins of Chestnut Hill College inside the Sorgenti Arena Sunday afternoon.
The sophomore duo of guard
Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) and forward
Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) paced the Knights' offense combining for 33 points but the Knights would fall to the final score of 75-58 against the Griffins to conclude the first weekend of play.
GAME RECAP
The Griffins opened the game taking a 6-0 lead before two made free throws from Abrams got the Knights on the scoreboard at the 7:36 mark.
As the home side extended their lead to 15-4, Awaka and rookie forward
Chinyere Ukaegbu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would combine for eight points as Queens were able to get within five, 17-12 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.
The duo of rookie guard
Sajol Thornhill (Ashburn, VA.) and guard
Ashley Chio (North Vancouver, CA.) would combine for a 5-2 run as the Knights cut their deficit down to two, 19-12 heading into the second quarter of play.
A three-pointer from Abrams would give the Knights their first lead of the game as Queens took a 20-19 lead at the 9:04 mark in the second quarter.
But the Griffins would respond with an 11-2 run to take a 30-22 lead with 6:28 left until halftime.
Awaka and rookie forward
Jaeda Hall (Saint Albans, N.Y.) would get the Knights within six, 32-26 before the home team ended the second quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 44-28 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Cold shooting in the second half would hurt the comeback attempt with the Knights being held to 10 made field goals over the final 20 minutes of play as the Griffins defeated Queens to the final score of 75-58 Sunday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Abrams recorded a team-high 19 points to go with four assists, three rebounds, and one steal.
- Awaka fell short of her first double-double of the year recording 14 points, and eight rebounds.
- Ukaegbu notched a career-best seven points, six rebounds, one steal and one block.
- The duo of Chio and rookie point guard Arianna Lopez (Newburgh, N.Y.) combined for 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

The Knights will use the week to prepare for their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 16 as they welcome the Yellow Jackets of American International College to town in non-conference play. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
