Women’s Tennis Sweeps Daemen, Advances to Saturday’s ECC Championship Match

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Friday the #1 seed Queens College women's tennis team matched up against #4 seed Wildcats of Daemen University in the second East Coast Conference Semifinal match to determine the final team for Saturday's Championship match.
 
The Knights would earn the doubles sweep before singles courts at #4 to #6 earned Queens a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats to advance to the Championship match.
 
With the win, the Knights improved to 5-1 overall on the year.

DOUBLES ACTION

Queens #2 doubles duo of graduate student Eva Rivoal (Saint-Denis-de-Pile, France) and junior Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) earned a 6-1 victory over Kitsa Scime and Yinett Del Leon for an early 1-0 lead in doubles play.
 
The Knights #3 doubles pair of graduate student Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and rookie Sakura Saito (Chiba, Japan) would earn a 6-1 victory over Carly Armitage and Stephanie Baier to clinch the doubles points.

At the same time, the #1 senior doubles pair Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) would defeat Frida Rubio and Bella Bjerkan to the score of 6-3 to complete the doubles sweep.

SINGLES ACTION

Needing three singles to victory to clinch the match, Lamy at #4 court would earn a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory over Armitage for a 2-0 match lead.
 
At #5 singles Berggren earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bjerkan as the Knights were now one match away from clinching the victory.
 
At #6 singles Junior Regina Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico)earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Baier as Queens clinched the match and advanced to Saturday's Championship match.
 
The singles matches at court #1 to #3 went unfinished.

NEXT MATCH

Head coach Alan Nagel and the Knights will match up against #2 seed Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College inside the QC Indoor Tennis Bubble for the ECC Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament set for May 2025.
