Volleyball Game Day Preview – Knights Open Four-Match Stand Beginning Tuesday Evening

FLUSHING, N.Y. -  The Queens College volleyball team is off to their best start in 20 years as they have begun the 2023 season with a 6-1 overall record. 
 
Following a 4-0 week, the Knights open a four-match homestand beginning with back-to-back non-conference matches against NE10 foes. The Setters of Pace University come to town on Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening before the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University visit Flushing on Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon 
 
Schedule for the Week (9/11 – 9/17)
  • Tuesday (Sept. 12) – vs. Pace University – 7 pm
    • Series History: 9-6
    • Steak: W2
    • Last Match: W, 3-2 Road (9/13/22)
  • Saturday (Sept. 16) – Southern Connecticut State University – 12 pm
    • Series History: 6-12
    • Steak: L7
    • Last Match: L, 2-3 Road (9/10/22)

Queens College Knights Preview (6-1 Overall Record)
  • Head Coach Stefan Leger and the Knights went 4-0 last week resulting in a four-match win streak giving Queens their first 6-1 start to the season since the 2003 season. 
  • The Knights began the week with a 3-1 victory over Caldwell on Tuesday (Sept. 5) afternoon before earning a 3-0 sweep at the Wildcat Regional Invitational against Holy Family (W, 3-1), Wilmington (W, 3-1), and Jefferson (W, 3-2) over the weekend.
  • The Knights are led by sophomore Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) who has recorded 85 kills (3.15 kps), 13 service aces, 59 digs, and 11 blocks with two double-doubles.
    • Conrad recorded her first career double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs against Post (9/1). 
    • She would record a career-best four blocks against Holy Family (9/8) while adding 15 digs and five services against Wilmington (9/9).
  • Junior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) has tallied 61 kills (second on the team), to go with eight service aces, and 93 digs to go with two double-doubles on the season. 
    • Franco notched a season-best 13 kills and 19 digs against Wilmington (9/9).
  • Junior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) tallied 239 assists, 61 digs, and 12 service aces.
    • Boudouris has tallied four double-doubles on the season.
    • She would record a season-best 48 assists in the win over Wilmington (9/9)
    • Against Jefferson she would record her second straight 40-plus assist performance to go with a season-best 15 digs against Jefferson (9/9).
  • On Monday (Sept. 4), the East Coast Conference office announced the first Weekly Award. 
    • Boudouris earned Setter of the Week
    • Sophomore Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) earned a spot on the Honor Roll sheet.
  • On Monday (Sept. 11), the East Coast Conference office announced the first Weekly Award. 
    • Conrad earned ECC Player of the Week
    • Boudouris earned her second straight ECC Setter of the Week
    • Munn earned ECC Defensive Player of the Week
    • Franco earned a Honor Roll spot

Pace University Setters Preview (4-1 Overall Record)
  • Pace enters Flushing with a 4-1 record with a four-match win streak. 
  • Last week the Setters went 2-0 in Delaware defeating Virginia Union University and Goldey-Beacom College.
  • The Knights match up against Pace for the third straight season with Queens holding a 9-6 series lead.
  • Last season Queens earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Setters on the road.
  • The Setters are led by Brielle Jones who has recorded a team-high 53 kills to go with seven service aces and 49 digs.

Southern Connecticut State University Preview (4-4 Overall Record)
  • SCSU has opened the year with a 4-4 record and will match up against Mercy, Post, and Assumption before traveling to Flushing to match up against Queens on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Knights are matching up against the Owls for the 19th straight season and first home match since the 2017 season. 
  • Queens are looking to end a seven-match losing streak to the Owls as they look for their first win since the 2014 season.
  • The Owls are paced by Sara Enright who has tallied 78 kills, 17 service aces, and 74 digs on the year. 
  • While Kacey Deecher has recorded 61 kills, 14 service aces, and 56 digs to help the Owls teams. 

Next Match
The Knights open up East Coast Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 23) afternoon as defending champions Wildcats of Daemen University come to town. First serve is set for 12:00 pm.
