FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to bounce back from a close 4-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team
(9-8 overall) continued East Regional play as they welcomed the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University
(11-4 overall) to Flushing.
But for the second straight match, the match would be decided by a crucial play of doubles.
The Ravens took the doubles point earning victories at #2 and #3 courts before both sides split the singles action to give the visitors the match over the Knights.
Queens fell behind early as the #2 doubles duo of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) fell to Maria Aguilo and Zoe Asterio Correa to the score of 6-1.
The Ravens took the 1-0 lead heading into singles play as the #3 doubles duo of
Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) and sophomore
Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) fell 6-4 to the pair of Aynara Ferraz and Michela Montori.
Queens would avoid the sweep at #1 doubles as the senior duo
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and
Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) earned a 7-5 victory over Ana Platisa and Liria Loria.
In singles play, Sciarrotta would tie the match at #4 as she defeated Correa to the score of 6-1, 6-4.
Fawzy would put Queens ahead 2-1 as the junior earned a two-set victory over Loria to the score of 6-1, 6-4 at #3 singles.
But three straight singles by the Ravens coming at #6, #5, and #1 singles would give the visitors the match.
While at #2 singles, Lamy would earn a three-set victory over Platisa to the score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 as Queens fell 4-3 on the afternoon.
