Willis Record Career-High 18 Points as Women’s Basketball Tangles with Defending ECC Champions Daemen

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Four Queens College women's basketball Knights scored in double-figures as they welcomed defending East Coast Conference champions Daemen University Wildcats to Flushing in conference play action Sunday afternoon.

Both teams traded three-pointers to open the scoring as sophomore Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) answered the Wildcats long-distance shot.
 
As the Wildcats took a 6-3 lead, the Knights answered with a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 advantage with 5:44 to go in the quarter.
 
Daemen would respond with a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead before rookie Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Davis answered back with a 4-0 run to reclaim a slim lead of 11-10 with 3:44 to go in the stanza.
 
However, the Wildcats would end the first quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 19-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
Looking to cut into their deficit, rookie Jordis Tautalatasi (Springfield, MA) opened the scoring for Queens in the second quarter to trim the deficit down to three, 19-16.
 
Queens would continue to keep pace with the Wildcats as they cut their deficit into the single digits before the visitors got hot from deep to extend their lead into double digits with a 41-26 advantage with 1:51 to go until halftime.
 
Junior Lateisha Willis (Nottingham, England) would end the second quarter on a 5-2 run as the Knights went into halftime trailing by 12, 43-31.
 
In the second half, Queens would attempt to cut their deficit down to 11 points on several occasions but with the Wildcats shooting over 40% from deep, it would help them keep their advantage over 11 points to earn the ECC victory over the Knights to the final score of 78-58.
 

By the Numbers

  • Willis led the Knights' offense with a career-best 18 points (6-of-9 FG, 6-of-9 FT) with six rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
  • Rookie Tautalatasi recorded a career-best 12 points while matching a career-best four rebounds to go with two assists and one steal.
  • Davis tallied 11 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals on the afternoon.
  • Freshman Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) tallied 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • As a team, the Knights were held to 37.1% as they went 23-62 from the field, while the Wildcats shot 50.8% going 30-59 from the field.

The three-game homestand concludes on Wednesday (Dec. 13) evening as they welcome Wilmington University Wildcats to town. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
