Game Day Preview: East Coast Conference Opens as Women’s Basketball Gets Set for Two Games

FLUSHING, N.Y. – After a 1-2 week which included a second half comeback victory over Felician University, the Queens College women's basketball team gets set for their East Coast Conference openers at home and on the road. 
 
East Coast Conference play opens on Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening as the Knights prepare to welcome the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia to town. The week will conclude in Staten Island, N.Y. on Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon as the Knights match up against the Dolphins of College of Staten Island in the first ECC road game of the year.

Queens College Knights Preview

  • The Knights are coming off a 1-2 week as they fell to Post University and Dominican while earning a second comeback victory over Felician Saturday afternoon.
  • Sophomore guard Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) leads the offense averaging 15.6 points, and 6.3 rebounds to go with 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals throughout seven games games.
    • Davis recorded a career-high 30 points to go with nine rebounds and five steals in the victory over Bloomfield.
    • On Monday (Nov. 20) Davis was awarded ECC Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors for performance.
  • Rookie forward Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) is averaging 11.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 1.9 steals over seven games.
    • Awaka has tallied two double-doubles on the year with a career-best 23 points (vs. Post), 14 rebounds (vs. Caldwell), three blocks (vs. Caldwell), & four steals (vs. Felician)
    • On Monday (Nov. 27) afternoon Awaka would earn her third straight ECC Rookie of the Week honors.

University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Preview

  • UDC enters the week with an overall record of 6-0 and are coming off a victory over Southern Connecticut State University.
  • It will be the 26th meeting overall and the first of two meetings this season with Queens trailing the series 11-14 All-Time.
  • Last season the Knights earned a series split with a buzzer-beat victory at home.
  • Tori Williams leads the offense averaging 18.7 points, and 6.2 rebounds per game.
  • Destiny Ryles is averaging 15.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.

College of Staten Island Dolphins Preview

Last Win: January 11, 2023 (Home 66-55)
Last Loss: February 8, 2023 (Away 46-57)
  • The Dolphins enter the week with an overall record of 3-2 and are coming off a victory over Bloomfield. They will travel to Molloy on Wednesday evening before hosting the Knights on Saturday afternoon.
  • The series is tied 2-2 with both teams having earned wins at home throughout the four contests to date as they meet on Wednesday in game one of a two-game series.
  • Last season it was a series split as both teams defended home court.
  • Dana Phelan leads the offense averaging 14.4 points, and 4.6 rebounds per game.
  • While Jenalyse Alarcon is averaging 11.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.

Next Game

The Knights open a three-game homestand beginning on Friday (Dec. 8) evening as they welcome the Saints of D'Youville University to ECC play. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
