Three Knights Record Double-Figures as Women’s Basketball Battles Dominican

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The trio of sophomore Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.), rookies Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) and Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored in double figures as the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Chargers of Dominican University of New York inside the Joal & Joseph Job Gymnasium Sunday afternoon on Day two of the Felician Holiday Classic.

Game Recap

Davis began the scoring for the Knights as Queens took a 4-2 lead in the opening two minutes of the game.
 
However, the Chargers would go on an 8-1 run as they took a 10-5 before a three-pointer from Abrams broke the scoring drought for Queens to get within two, 10-8 with 2:53 left in the first quarter.
 
Both teams would trade buckets but the Chargers would take a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter of play.
 
Abrams would quickly tie the game at 14-14 just nine seconds into the second quarter before Dominican reclaimed a 17-14 lead with 9:11 to go.
 
Both teams would go scoreless over the next few minutes of the game before a Davis three-pointer tied the game at 17-17 with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
 
But the Chargers would end the quarter on a 15-6 run as they took a 32-23 lead at halftime.
 
With the Knights trailing 34-25, Awaka would record six points to help the Knights go on an 8-0 run as Queens cut their deficit down to 34-33 with 4:41 to go in the third quarter.
 
But the Charger responded with a 5-2 run to extend their advantage to 39-35 with 3:53 left.
 
However, Queens staying in rhythm would end the quarter on a 5-0 run as Abrams recorded another three-pointer to bring the Knights within one before sophomore Gianna Henriques's (Bronx, N.Y.) layup gave the Knights a lead of 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Queens would outscore Dominican 17-7 as they held the Chargers to just three made field goals in the quarter.
 
It would be a slow start for both teams in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as neither side was able to hit a field goal. But free throws would allow the Chargers to tie the game at 41-41 with 6:54 left in the game.
 
With the Knights still searching for offense, Dominican would take a four-point lead of 45-41 with 5:21 left in the game.
 
Awaka would break the scoreless drought for the Knights with a layup at 2:58 to get Queens within two, 45-43.
 
But it would be the closest Queens would get within of a comeback as the Chargers defeated the Knights to the final score of 51-47.

By the Numbers

  • Davis led the Knights in scoring with 15 points to go with five rebounds and four assists.
  • Abrams recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and a career-high three steals.
  • Awaka tallied her second double-double of the year with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and two steals.
  • As a team, the Knights shot 31.4% as they went 16-51 from the field, while the Chargers shot 36.2% going 21-58 from the field.
    • The Knights held a 44-34 rebounding margin with a 9-3 edge on second-chance points.

Next Game

East Coast Conference play opens in Flushing on Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening as the Knights welcome the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia to town. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
