Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Paquet Scores as Men’s Soccer Battles Firebirds in ECC Play Saturday Afternoon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It would be East Coast Conference play to conclude the week's play as the Queens College men's soccer team traveled to Washington, D.C. with a match-up against the Firebirds of The University of the District of Columbia at RFK Field Saturday afternoon. 
 
Senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) would give the Knights an early lead before the Firebirds scored two goals in the first half to defeat Queens to the final score of 2-1 in ECC play. 
 
With the loss, the Knights move to 5-4-2 overall and 2-2 in ECC play.
 
Match Recap
  • Queens began the first half as the aggressor as senior Leo Pinto (Forest Hills, N.Y.) shot on goal was denied in the 6th minute of play. 
  • In the 10th minute of play, junior goalie Juan Cruz Ladino (Cali, Colombia) would deny the Firebirds a scoring opportunity with a timely save. 
  • On the counterattack, Queens would earn a penalty kick and Paquet for the second straight match would put the PK away to give Queens a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play. 
  • The Firebirds would respond in the 24th minute of play to tie the game at 1-1 before taking a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute of play. 
  • Looking to respond sophomore Eyob Gaffigan's (Walkersville, MD) shot would hit the post in the 38thminute of play.
  • With 17 seconds remaining just before halftime, freshman Tommy Wagner (East Northport, N.Y.) shot on goal was bottled up by the Firebirds goalie as Queens went into halftime trailing 2-1. 
  • It would be a defensive battle in the second half as Queens searched for the equalizer. 
  • In the 66th minute of play, junior Joaquim Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) header off a corner kick was denied by the Firebirds goalie. 
  • Queens would tally five shots on goals in the final 20 minutes of play, but the Firebirds' defense would hold firm as the Knights dropped their second ECC match of the year. 

Match Highlights
  • Paquet recorded his third goal of the year and the 14th of his career.
    • For the seventh straight match, Paquet has recorded a point to extend his career points tally to 38 in 31 matches.
  • In goal, Ladino made a career-high eight saves.
  • UDC held a 14-12 shots and 10-7 shots on goal advantage.

Head coach Frank Vertullo and the Knights open a three-match homestand beginning on Wednesday (Oct. 11) evening the Panthers of Adelphi University visit Flushing for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
