Diel’s Goal Helps Women’s Soccer Salvage Tie Against Assumption Wednesday Evening

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to non-conference play to open the week, the Queens College women's soccer team welcomed the Greyhounds of Assumption University to Flushing for the first time since the 2014 season.

In a defensive match for over 80 minutes of play, junior Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) would give the Knights a 1-0 lead before the visitors struck in the 89th minute of play as both teams played out to a 1-1 draw at Knights Field Wednesday evening.

With the tie, the Knights see their record move to 4-5-3 overall on the year.

Match Recap

Queens came out of the gate pressing and looked for a quick scoring opportunity but an offside call would cancel any threatening chance for the home side just 11 seconds into the match.

The Knights would get their second chance in the 26th minute of play before another offside canceled Queens' opportunity to move the ball further.

Queens would be held without a shot in the first but two timely saves from graduate student goalie Erin Kelly (Massapequa, N.Y.) would help the Knights keep the scoreless at halftime.

After the Greyhounds opened the shots in the second, Queens would record their first shot of the game in the 55th minute as rookie Cassidy Pong's (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) shot went out right.

After an offside canceled the Greyhounds' attacking opportunity, junior Julia Ragone (Centereach, N.Y.) on the counterattack shot would sail out right in the 58th minute of play.

As Kelly made their third save of the evening in the 63rd minute, the Knights would pick up the tempo.

As play entered the final 20 minutes of play and the match still scoreless, rookie Ava Angiuli's (Wantagh, N.Y.) shot in the 74th minute of play would get blocked before fellow classmate Jenna Rosenberger's(Smithtown, N.Y.) rebound shot was denied by a timely save from the Greyhounds goalie.

After back-to-back shots from the visitors sailed out right, the Knights on the counterattack would strike as Ragone delivered a through ball for Diel to blast a right-foot shot from the top corner of the 18-yard box over the Greyhounds goalie into the top left corner as the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute of play.

With a 1-0 lead, the Knights looked to put the match away but shots from Rosenberger, Ragone, and Pong would all get blocked.

With play entering the final five minutes of play, senior Aida Rose Dydasco Pedemonte (South San Francisco, CA) shot on goal in the 88th minute of play would be saved.

However, with 1:07 remaining in the match, the Greyhounds would get the tying goal of the match as Queens earned a tie for the second straight meeting against the Greyhounds at home.
