Men’s Basketball Continues ECC Play in the Nation’s Capital

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team continues East Coast Conference play as the Knights match up against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., on Saturday (Jan. 14) afternoon.

Series Notes:
  • It will be the first of two meeting this season with Queens leading the series 13-8.
  • The Knights are 6-4 against the Firebirds in their 10 games. 
  • Queens are in search of their first win in DC since the 2016-17 season when the Knights swept the season series 2-0. 
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens enters Saturday's conference game with an overall record of 5-10 and 2-3 in conference play.
    • The Knights are coming off an 84-72 victory over Staten Island Wednesday evening as they ended their six-game losing streak.
  • Queens is averaging 68.3 points per game on 40.6% shooting and are averaging 40.9 rebounds and 12.0 assists per game in 15 games played.
  • Sophomore Sunnie Diamond (Hiram, GA) leads the offense averaging 14.6 points per game, and recorded a career-high 24 points in the victory over Staten Island
    • Diamond recorded the Knights first triple-double of the season in the victory over Alliance and the first triple-double since the 15-16 season. 
    • Diamond is one of six players nationally to record a triple-double this season.
  • Senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.)  is averaging 10.1 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game. 
    • The senior has tallied five double-doubles on the season.
    • Nationally Carey is ranked #2 with 45 blocks on the season in 15 games played.
  • On Tuesday (Jan. 3), senior guard Dion Herrington (Englewood, N.J.) was awarded ECC Player of the week honors. (Link) 
Scouting the Firebirds
  • District of Columbia enters Saturday with an overall record of 4-10 and 2-3 in conference play.
    • The Firebirds are coming off an 84-79 loss to Molloy in Rockville Centre Wednesday evening.
  • In 14 games, The Firebirds are averaging 81.0 points per game on 45.5% shooting, 38.1 rebounds, and 17.8 assists per game. 
  • Michael Aiken leads the offense averaging 14.9 points per game.
    • Aiken tallied a season-high 24 points against Bowie State.
  • Jahmir Marable-Williams is averaging 11.3 points per game.
    • Marable-Williams notched a season-high 22 points against Molloy.

  • Head coach Matt Collier and the Knights return home on Wednesday (Jan.18) evening as they welcome the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College in conference play. Tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
