Men’s Basketball Returns to East Coast Conference Play at Home

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team returns to East Coast Conference play as the Knights welcome fellow CUNY member College of Staten Island Dolphins to Flushing Wednesday evening.

Series Notes:
  • It will be the first of two meeting this season with the series tied 1-1.
  • Queens evened the series last season with a 79-64 road victory.  
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens enters Wednesday's conference game with an overall record of 4-10 and 1-3 in conference play.
    • They are in the middle of a season-high six-game losing streak having dropped all five games at home. 
  • Queens is averaging 67.1 points per game on 40.2% shooting and are averaging 40.4 rebounds and 11.6 assists per game in 14 games played.
    • In the six-game losing streak, the Knights are shooting 37.8% from the field and are shooting 55.7% from the free line (78-140).
  • Sophomore Sunnie Diamond (Hiram, GA) leads the offense averaging 13.6 points per game and recorded a career-high 21 points in the victory over Daemen. 
    • Diamond recorded the Knights first triple-double of the season in the victory over Alliance and the first triple-double since the 15-16 season. 
    • Diamond is one of six players nationally to record a triple-double this season.
    • Diamond has missed 5 of the last six games, while seeing limited action against Molloy on Jan. 4.
  • While senior William Ellis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is averaging 11.4 points per game.
    • Ellis recorded a season-high 22 points in the victory over Holy Family. 
    • The senior has missed the last six games due to injury.
  • Senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.)  is averaging 10.5 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. 
    • The senior has tallied five double-doubles on the season, including three in the last four games with a career-best and ECC season-high 17 rebounds.
    • Nationally Carey is ranked tied #2 with 41 blocks on the season (second most).
  • On Tuesday (Jan. 3), senior guard Dion Herrington (Englewood, N.J.) was awarded ECC Player of the week honors. (Link)
Scouting the Dolphins
  • Staten Island enters Flushing with an overall record of 4-10 and 2-3 in conference play.
    • The Dolphins are coming off a 1-1 week having lost to Daemen Friday evening before defeating D'Youville Sunday afternoon.
  • In 14 games, The Dolphins are averaging 72.0 points per game on 43.5% shooting, 34.8 rebounds, and 16.3 assists per game. 
  • Messiah Mallory leads the offense averaging 16.2 points per game.
    • Mallory tallied a season-high 29 points against the District of Columbia.
  • Luis Armas is averaging 14.6 points per game.
    • Armas notched a season-high 25 points against Goldey-Beacom.

  • Head coach Matt Collier and the Knights hit the road to conclude the week with a trip to the Nation's Capital on Saturday (Jan. 14) afternoon as they match up against the Firebirds of The University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
