LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Continuing day 2 of the Georgian Court Invitational, the Queens College volleyball team went up against the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose Saturday morning at the GCU Wellness Center.
The freshmen class stood out as the Knights fought in their four-set loss which saw a combined 19 ties and 11 score changes.
Match Recap (Final Score 1-3 | Sets 19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 21-25)
After the Knights started the first set 1-0, the Golden Knights went on a 6-1 run to take a 6-2 lead. Saint Rose would jump out to a seven-point advantage as they led 12-5 before Queens attempted their comeback. Trailing 14-8, the Golden Knights committed three straight errors as the Knights came back within three, 14-11.
As Queens fought back and trimmed the deficit down to 17-16, errors would derail the comeback attempt as Saint Rose closed out the first set to go up 1-0 with a 25-19 victory.
Hurt by two errors to begin the second set, the Knights found themselves trailing 4-0 before the deficit ballooned to 9-3. Freshman
Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FL) started to make her mark as she tallied two kills to put Queens on a 3-0 run.
Following a kill by senior
Anjeline Arnakis (Bayside, N.Y.) to bring Queens within one, 14-12, the Knights committed three straight errors to put themselves in a 17-12 deficit. Down by 18-13, Osterhoudt made her presence felt by the net as the Knights tied the second set 18-18.
Both sides would exchange points before a 3-0 run led by Arnakis and senor
Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) put the Knights up 24-22. But the Golden Knights would tie the set 24-24 before a Golden Knights attacking error and a kill by Arnakis gave Queens the second set 26-24 to tie the match 1-1.
The third set saw Saint Rose jump ahead 7-1 before Queens put together a 4-1 run to come within 8-5. The Knights would stay close to the score as they fought back through freshman
Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) and Osterhoudt. The duo would combine for eight kills in the third set.
Trailing 18-17, Osterhoudt and Conrad tallied three straight kills as the Knights took a 20-18 lead. But the Golden Knights would continue to find a hole in the Knights' defense as they took the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set saw the Knights take a 2-0 lead before Saint Rose tallied three straight points to take a 3-2 lead. But the Knights led by Osterhoudt and freshman
Ryann Frontera (Dripping Springs, TX) put together a 3-0 run of their own for a 5-3 advantage.
The fourth set saw eight score ties and five lead changes as both sides continued to respond to each other runs. As Saint Rose jumped ahead 14-8, sophomore
Alicia Cervera Sospedra (Valencia, Spain) led a 4-0 run as she tallied two service aces as Queens got within two, 14-12.
Led by forced errors, Queens would tie the fourth set 16-16 before two straight Knights errors gave Saint Rose an 18-16 advantage.
But the Knights refused to go away as Deodat and freshman
Taylor Smith (Temecula, CA) gave Queens a one-point lead at 19-18.
Errors would be the downfall of the match as Queens committed five errors in Saint Rose's 7-2 run to take the fourth set 25-21 and the match to the final score of 3-1.
Match Highlights
- Conrad led the Knights' offense with a career-high 12 kills, while Deodat tallied nine and a career-high eight kills from Osterhoudt.
- It was a blocking party for Queens as the underclassmen tallied 13 blocks led by Smith (7), Osterhoudt (6), and Sospedra (4).
- sophomore Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) tallied a team-high 22 assists, while freshman Jayna Marie Lorenzo (Rodeo, CA) notched a career-high 18 assists.
- Frontera led the way with 20 digs
- The Knights led a 9-4 service ace advantage as the trio of Sospedra, Conrad, and Frontera combined for six aces.
