DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon, the Queens College women's soccer team took on nationally ranked #21 Mercy College Mavericks at Mercy Field.
Freshman
Katelyn Villacres (Bayside, N.Y.) earned her first career start in goal as the rookie made eight saves but the Knights would fall 2-0 to the Mavericks to move to 1-2 in ECC play.
Villacres kept her Knights in the match as she made four saves in the first half but a goal in the 37
th minute of play would give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Knights came out in the second half as the aggressor but an offside in the 49
th minute against the visitors would stop the counterattack. With Villacres continuing to keep the Knights in the game, Queens started to force the press more.
A shot by sophomore
Nicole Martinez (Glendale, N.Y.) would go out right in the 79
th minute. After a corner kick earned the Knights a set piece, junior
Marina Pappas's (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) shot on goal would be saved as the Knights looked to tie the game only to be denied by a timely save from the Mavericks goalie.
The Mavericks would seal a 2-0 win with a goal in the 81
