WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – Eight Knights led the way for their respective sports as the Queens College fall sports earned top billings from the East Coast Conference office in the Weekly Reports released Monday afternoon.
Volleyball
Player of the Week – Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) | OH
After earning a honor roll spot in two of the three previous weekly awards, Franco earned top honors as the sophomore was named Player of the Week.
The Lynbrook native tallied 33 kills, 52 digs, and two blocks as she totaled two double-doubles in the Knights' 2-1 non-conference week. Franco notched 14 kills and 25 digs (one short of tying her career-high) in the 3-2 victory over Pace Tuesday evening before the Lynbrook native recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 17 digs in the 3-1 victory over Caldwell Sunday afternoon at home.
Rookie of the Week – Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) | L
Munn becomes the third freshman to earn Rookie of the Week honors after teammates
Ryann Frontera (Dripping Springs, TX) and
Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) were awarded during Week one and Week 3 of the weekly reports sheet.
The Torrance native tallied 49 digs, six assists, and two service aces in the Knights' 2-1 non-conference week. The rookie stepped up as the Knights lead Libero on the week tallying three double-digit digs including a career-high 22 digs and two service aces in the 3-1 victory over Caldwell Sunday afternoon.
Men's Soccer
Offensive Player of the Week – Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) | Midfielder
For the second straight week, men's soccer has earned a Knights as Offensive Player of the Week as Paquet was awarded top honors. Having earned a honor roll spot twice this season, the sophomore was awarded Offensive Player of the Week.
Paquet continued his rich form as the sophomore netted two game-winners and four points in the Knights' 2-0 week. The Sevilla native began the week with a goal against nationally ranked #15 SCSU before ending the week with a goal against Daemen in the Knights' 3-0 victory Daemen in ECC play.
Defensive Player of the Week – Dario Giovanni Cruz (Guadalajara, Mexico) | Goalkeeper
For the second straight week, Cruz has been named Defensive Player of the Week.
Playing a total of 176 minutes Cruz made four saves in the Knights' 2-0 shutout week which included a 3-0 victory over nationally ranked #15 SCSU Wednesday evening. The senior would make two saves in Queens' 3-0 victory over Daemen Saturday afternoon as the Knights earned their fourth straight and second straight conference victory of the year. The goalie earned his 14th career victory to take sole possession of second place on the All-Time Career Wins list in program history.
Honor Roll – Bryce Cherry (Amityville, N.Y.) | Forward
The rookie totaled two goals for four points in the Knights' 2-0 week. Cherry would help Queens defeat nationally ranked #15 SCSU 3-0 Wednesday evening before ending the week with his first conference goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Daemen Saturday afternoon.
Women's Soccer
Honor Roll – Marina Pappas (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) | Midfielder
Pappas netted her first career game-winning goal in Queens' 1-0 victory over Daemen in the lone game for the Knights on the week. The New Hyde Park native tallied the lone shot on goal in the 61st minute as the Knights picked up their first ECC win and give first-year head coach
Thomas Paris his first career victory.
Women's Tennis
Rookie of the Week – Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France)
The rookie opened her Knights career on a high note going undefeated with a 4-0 record in singles and doubles play. She began the week against Daemen in #2 singles and doubles. Playing at #2 singles against Daemen Kista Scime, the French native picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory. To conclude the week, the rookie was promoted to #1 singles against DYU and picked up her second straight singles victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Yuliia Kashtelian
Honor Roll – Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland)
Makal picked off where she left last season as Poland native went 3-0 on the week. She started the fall season with a 2-0 record winning both matches on Friday against Daemen. At #1 doubles with teammate
Gabriela Sciarrotta, the duo picked up a 6-1 victory before Makal closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at #1 single over Rubio. On Saturday, the Poland native went 1-0 with a 6-3 victory at #1 doubles and was given the day off in singles play.
