Women’s Basketball Opens 22-23 Season Against Chestnut Hill Saturday Evening

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The 2022-2023 Queens College women's basketball team season tipped off Saturday evening in the city of Brotherly love with the Knights competing in the annual ECC/CACC Conference Challenge for the fifth straight season.

In game two on the campus of Thomas Jefferson University, Queens matched up against the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College who made the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament last season.

Sophomore Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) began the scoring for the Knights as she knocked down two free throws before the Griffins went on a 16-3 run.

It was a sluggish start to the game as the Knight fell behind 25-9 after the first quarter shooting 20% from the percentage. The slow start carried into the second quarter as the Knights were unable to build any momentum and would trail 46-17 at halftime.

Queens would fare better in the second half including a 17-point third quarter as they kept pace with the Griffins. Freshman forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and graduate student Raven Pitt (Valley Stream, N.Y.) combined for 12 points (5-6 FG) as the Knights forced six turnovers with the Whitesboro native recording two steals.

But the first-half deficit would prove to be too much for the Knights to overcome as they dropped the season opener.

Game Highlights
  • Lapertosa led the Knights with a team-high 12 points (6-7 FG) with five rebounds and three steals in her debut.
  • While rookie center Gianna Henriques (Bronx, N.Y) tallied eight points (4-6 FG) to go with team-high nine rebounds and two blocks in her debut.
NEXT TIP-OFF: It will be a short rest as the Knights conclude the conference challenge against host Thomas Jefferson University Rams Sunday (Nov. 13) afternoon. Tip-Off set for 2:00 P.M.
