Women’s Tennis Battles Firebirds on the Road

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Queens College women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season in the nation's capital as they matched up against the defending East Coast Conference champions the University of the District of Columbia Saturday afternoon. 
 
Looking to clinch the second seed in the upcoming ECC tournament, the Knights fell 4-3 in their regular season finale to the Firebirds. 
 
Win the loss, the Knights move to 4-2 overall, and 3-2 in ECC play.  
 
Doubles Play
 
The Knights fell behind 1-0 in doubles play as the duo of junior Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) / Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) fell 6-2 to the pair of Laura Marie/Celia Bastin. 
 
Queens #3 pair of sophomore Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan) / senior Chloe Certain (Obernai, France) earned a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win over Mariona Franco/Claudia Bahamon to the knot doubles competition at 1-1. 
 
The #1 pair senior pair of Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) / Gabriela Sciarrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) would clinch the doubles point for the Knights in a 7-5 victory over Simone Parn/Sofia Bellucco. 
 
Singles Play
 
The Firebirds would knot the match 1-1 as Tarbujaru fell 6-0, 6-2 to Marie at #3 singles action. 
 
Queens would go down 2-1 as junior Mariana Ling (Orlando, Florida) fell 6-1, 6-2 at #5 singles to Bellucco. 
 
At #4 singles Sciarrotta would drop her singles match to 6-4, 6-3 as Bastin gave her Firebirds a 3-1 lead. 
 
At #2 singles, Queens would fight back as freshman Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) earned a thrilling 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over Franco to bring the Knights within one of tying the match. 
 
But the Firebirds would clinch the match at #1 singles as Makal fell in a three-setter to Parn in a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 loss.
 
At #6 singles, Certain would give the Knights their third victory of the afternoon as she fought back from a 3-6 first-set loss over Valentina Brienza to earn a 6-2, 10-8 victory. 
 
UP NEXT: Head Coach Alan Nagel and his Knights will now use the week to prepare for the East Coast Conference Tournament set to begin Friday (Oct. 28) afternoon in Flushing. More details to follow.
