SPARKILL, N.Y. – Returning to East Coast Conference play, the Queens College women's soccer team matched up against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at Spartan Field Saturday afternoon.
The Knights surrendered an early goal in the first before sophomore
Jacklyn Diel (Stony Brook, N.Y.) scored in the 83
rdminute as Queens earned a hard-fought draw against the Spartans.
With the tie, the Knights move to 2-4-1 in ECC play with seven points on the season.
With the draw, Queens moves to fifth place but will need Daemen University to lose their two remaining games, while the Knights will need to defeat the College of Staten Island to earn the fourth seed in the ECC Tournament.
The Knights were the aggressors in the first half as they tallied six shots on the goal but were unlucky to find the back of the net. After the Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute of play, Queens continued to tack on the shots but were unable to convert their opportunities.
The second half saw the Spartans take control but freshman goalie
Katelyn Villacres (Bayside, N.Y.) kept her Knights in the game as she continued to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Following a foul on the Spartans, Queens would convert as sophomore
Gabrielle Christian's (Forest Hills, N.Y.) cross allowed Diel to beat the Spartans goalie to knot the game at 1-1 in the 83
rd minute of play.
Queens would get one final attempt in the 88
th minute but freshman
Aida Rose Dydasco Pedemonte's (South San Francisco, CA) shot would get saved by the Spartans as the Knights salvaged a draw keeping their postseason hopes alive.
